What would be a good sticking agent for barbecue sauce other than corn syrup?

I have usually used corn syrup for the sticking agent in the sauces I made but I have heard about the bad side of corn syrup and I would like your opinions and suggestions of alternatives that stick to food just as well and would work in barbecue sauce.
