Why are Volkswagon cars so small?

Hey, I'm a 17 year old guy sitting in the back of his mother's Jetta on a road trip and hunched over so I don't hit my head on the low ceiling. Funny thing is I'm not that big either, just 5'11.5", and I have troubles sitting back here. Are Germans small or something or is there another reason they make their cars so small.
