Where can I access free military records?

I am searching for information on my second great uncle who died during ww1. His name is Pvt. Benjamin Buddle and I believe there is only one Benjamin Buddle in the military records. But every site I go on you need to pay for to access the photos and records etc. (like Ancestry). Does anyone know a site that is free?
